What Is the Keto Diet?

Does the keto diet have lasting power, or is it just another fad? While it takes cues from popular diets like Atkins and other low-carb diets, it has a differentiating factor: Maintaining constant ketosis.

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a normal metabolic process, which is something your body does to keep working. When it doesn’t have enough carbohydrates from food, your cells begin to burn fat. While maintaining a state of fat-burning ketosis can help you lose weight efficiently, it can be dangerous if done improperly. Maintaining ketosis should always be done under the supervision of a weight loss specialist to avoid electrolyte disturbances, unhealthy glucose levels and fluid shifts, especially in people with medical conditions and on certain medications.

Health benefits of the keto diet

When done properly, and under medical supervision, the keto diet can have many health benefits, including:

  • Rapid weight loss
Low-carb diets eliminate water from the body more effectively than other diets. They also lead to lower insulin levels, causing the kidneys to shed excess sodium. This process helps encourage rapid weight loss in the first few weeks of the diet.
  • Reduction in appetite
How many times have you struggled with hunger while dieting? Too many to count? When you eat fewer carbs and more protein, your appetite will go down and it will be easier to eat fewer calories (without getting hangry).
  • Reduction in abdominal fat
Low-carb diets, like the keto diet, are very effective at reducing harmful abdominal fat. Over time, this can help lower your risk for metabolic disorders, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
  • Reduction in blood pressure
High blood pressure is risky business and can lead to heart and kidney disease, heart attack, stroke and even some forms of dementia. Reducing carbs has a direct and positive effect on blood pressure.
